The Basics

If you’re just getting the whole cannabis thing down, your next question is probably about how to clean your pipe. We couldn’t live without our Le Pipe. There’s so many reasons to love a one hitter. But, even after just one hit, your pipe will get dirty. So, here’s the cleaning secrets you need to know.

Why Clean Your Pipe?

It’s important to regularly clean your pipe. Every time you do, you’ll extend its life by keeping soot and plant matter from building up on it. With regular cleaning, you’ll also get rid of blockages that can inhibit your draw on pipes of any material. Plus, you’ll avoid the awful taste of a dirty pipe. Just like those designer shoes in your closet, you’ve gotta take good care of your smoking gear. So, here’s our secrets for how to clean a pipe.

Here's how to clean a pipe with alcohol—fast! Special Considerations for Ceramic Pipes

If your pipe is ceramic, regular cleaning will also keep plant matter from corroding the glaze. Buildup could not only just render your pipe nonfunctional, but it’s also a health thing. Resin and soot residue can eventually cause ceramic glazes to crack or craze. Of course, any reputable manufacturer will use non-toxic, food-safe glazes. Nonetheless, ceramic glazes are made from natural materials that contain trace elements of minerals and metal that you don’t want to breathe in. So, when you see any cracks or crazing, just to be safe, you should replace your pipe.

Secret #1—How to Clean a Pipe with What You Have in Your Pantry

You can definitely buy fancy cleaning solutions for your pipe, but you don’t need to. What you have in your pantry will work just fine. Your fave solution will probably depend on what kind of pipe you have and what else is important to you. Do you have a ceramic or a glass pipe? Are you going for speed, an environmentally friendly solution, or a deep clean? No matter your preferences, here’s the inside scoop.

Secret #2—How To Clean a Pipe Fast

If you’re as fond of ceramic pipes as we are, it’s important to clean them gently to keep the glaze from cracking or crazing. Here’s the safest—and fastest—way to do it. Just soak a cotton ball/swab with rubbing alcohol. Then, gently rub the soot and resin off your pipe. Make sure to get the nooks and crannies until any gunk or discoloration comes off. Of course, alcohol isn’t the most environmentally-friendly option. (Read on for those!) But you won’t weaken the glaze on your ceramic pipe with heat or prolonged soaking. Pro tip: After you finish with the rubbing alcohol, rinse your pipe thoroughly under warm water to remove any lingering medicinal taste or smell.

Secret #3—Deep Cleaning for Glass Pipes

Here’s how to clean a pipe deeply—as long as it’s a glass pipe. First, fill up a lidded plastic container with 91% Iso Pure Alcohol—enough to cover the pipe. Then, soak it overnight with the lid on so that the alcohol doesn’t evaporate. Next morning, pull your pipe out and scrub anything stubborn with a pipe cleaner and then rinse with hot water. You can also use this technique with any of the other solutions we outline here. You might just have to do a bit more scrubbing in the morning if you’re not using alcohol.

Secret #4—How to Clean a Pipe in the Dishwasher

If you really want to sanitize your borosilicate glass pipe, you can put it in the dishwasher. (Again, to preserve the glaze on ceramic pipes, definitely don’t put them in the dishwasher. But you’ll still need to clean your borosilicate pipe by hand first to get the big stuff off. Residual plant matter can get sticky, and you’re burning it in your pipe with an open flame. So, just like you can’t throw a pan with burned-on food straight into the dishwasher, your pipe won’t really get clean unless you first rub, soak, or boil off any schmutz. After you’re done with that, if you want to toss it in, feel free.

Secret #5—How to Clean a Pipe Using Your Microwave

Here’s how to clean a pipe using your microwave. Fill a microwave-safe container with enough water to cover your pipe. Before you put your pipe in, microwave the water for 2 minutes. It’ll be hot when you take it out, so use an oven mitt. Then, add a generous amount of liquid dishwashing soap and microwave for another 90 seconds. Take the container out and stir until the detergent has fully dissolved. Next, gently place your pipe into the solution. Now, soak it for 10 minutes. If there’s still residue, submerge it again and rub it with a soft rag or a dish sponge. Once you’ve gotten rid of any stubborn bits, rinse it off and voila!

These cleaning methods aren't just for how to clean a pipe—use them on all your smoking accessories

Secret #6—How To Clean a Pipe Without Any Chemicals

If you’re an eco-conscious cleaner, here’s how to clean a pipe without any chemicals. To stay completely green, you’ll want to ditch the alcohol entirely. Instead, try soaking your pipe in a combination of salt and vinegar. Baking soda and vinegar work well, too. Or try combining a teaspoon of salt and baking soda with water. Pro tip: If you encounter any particularly hard bits, you can also throw your borosilicate glass pipe in the freezer for a bit and then repeat the soak.

Secret #8—Eco-Friendly Deep Cleaning

Here’s another option for how to clean a glass pipe deeply when you don’t want to use alcohol. Instead, add baking soda, vinegar, and salt to a pot of boiling water. Then, place your glass pipe in the water. (Again, just don’t do this with ceramic pipes. Any prolonged soaking could make the clay expand, and that will weaken the glaze.) When your solution starts boiling, reduce the heat. The solution should loosen and remove the residue in about 10 minutes. If there’s any gunk left, you can clean it off with a scrubber or pipe cleaner. As always, give your pipe a final rinse and dry. Then you’re good to go.

Secret #9—How to Clean a Pipe with Lemon Juice

Here’s another alternative to the harsh chemicals in cleaning solutions. Try this method with coarse salt and lemon juice. Lemon juice is a great substitute for alcohol. It’s acidic enough to effectively get rid of resin and stains. Lemon juice and salt are also antibacterial and great for neutralizing odors. Here’s how to clean a pipe with this natural solution. Simply shake up your glass pipe in the mixture of lemon juice and salt to strip away residue and gunk. With that and some rinses of boiling hot distilled water, you’ll get the most natural clean. Use a cloth and a pipe cleaner to wipe off the last bits of residue, and you’re set for your next smoke sesh.

Secret #10—How to Clean a Pipe with Olive Oil

Yep, that’s right. You can even clean your pipe with olive oil. So, even if you run out of the other ingredients mentioned here, we’re betting you can find some olive oil or another plant-based oil in your pantry. While slathering your pipe in oil may sound counterproductive, it’s actually a great cleansing option. The charred plant matter will soak up the oil and that will soften it, making it easier to get off your pipe. This method might take a little more scrubbing than others. But you can use this completely green method on your ceramic pipe, too.

Secret #11—How Often Should You Clean Your Pipe?

If you’re a clean freak, you can clean your pipe after every use. But you don’t need to. We suggest cleaning your pipe after 4-5 uses to help cut down any plant matter buildup.

Secret #12—A Final Shine

Once your pipe is fresh and clean, you also might want to buff it with a soft cloth. Is this step necessary? Not at all. But if you’re a perfectionist like us, buffing your pipe will make it extra sparkly.

Responsible Use

For legal adults 21+ use only. Start low and go slow. Smoking cannabis can cause drowsiness—don’t drive or operate machinery after using cannabis or hemp-derived THC products. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
