How to Roll a Joint Video Transcript
Introduction
Hey, everyone. I’m Kim Myles, a house guest, designer, and professional opinion-haver on TV. Kristina asked me to guest host today because she knows that I’m an OG flower stan, and we’re gonna tackle a skill that can elude even the most seasoned smokers— rolling a j. And I mean rolling a joint that will delight your friends and make your enemies want to sleep with you.
Where Most of Us Get Stuck with How to Roll a Joint
Now, lots of you have told us that tucking the paper in is where the wheels really start to come off of the process for you. And if that sounds familiar, don’t worry. I got you.
How to Roll a Joint with House of Puff’s Nebula Tray
But first, I have to introduce you to my lovely rolling assistant, House of Puff’s Nebula Tray. She keeps me right and tight.
Prep Your Flower
Step one, your flower. Now, you want to make sure that the grind is light and fluffy. Okay? Not chunky and not dusty fine. Because too chunky and you get an uneven burn. Too fine and you get a clog, and you’re not letting her breathe.
Filters are Everything
Now, to that end, filters are everything. Not only do they help with airflow, but they’re gonna keep your pinkies from getting stinky. Some rolling papers, like House of Puff’s, come with filters. And if they’re really sweet to you, the filters are perforated. Thanks, House of Puff. Now, even if they haven’t been thoughtful enough to give you perforations, it’s easy to make a filter.
How to Roll a Joint with an “M” Filter
But since we have some, here’s what I like to do. I like to use those little perforations and what do you know? Back and forth—a little accordion fold. And honestly, I’m always going for an “M”. So I’ve made my little M. So cute! And, then, all I’m doing is I’m just pinching and rolling, pinching and rolling—like Spanx. Okay. Here we go. That’s me. Pinching and rolling, pinching and rolling, pinching and rolling.
Prep Your Paper
Next, the paper. Okay, so you take the paper. And what you want is to make sure that the glue side is up. And the way that you can tell the glue side is that she’s shiny just like you, star. Okay? Now you’re going to put the glue towards you, and here’s a trick. You notice that the paper has a crease already in it. Okay?
Kim’s Secrets for How to Roll a Joint
So, you’re going to take this paper, glue strip toward you on top, and you’re gonna fold the bottom half in half. These are secrets that only the most fabulous House of Puffers deserve to know. No, everyone should know this, but truly. So, what I’ve done now is I’ve created a channel. The next thing that I do is I take my nail and this is where the tuck comes in. I just curl that little corner. And then I curl this little corner, and then I just kinda roll this paper. There’s nothing in it. I’m just rolling that bottom part. It’s like waist training without the patriarchy.
How to Use the Nebula Rolling Tray
Now this is where Nebula, honey, watch what she does. So pretty. She keeps me nice and neat. I have my paper with the channel, and now I’m gonna have my flower. K. So I come in and I just do a little sprinkly. Once you have the first sprinkle in, that weights the paper down.
How to Roll a Joint Using the Channel
Let’s roll a fatty, shall we? This is where having folded that channel serves me really well. Alright, and you can see that I’m leaving kind of a fingernail length on both sides. Come in. Tilt this down. Looks pretty good! You notice there’s no perfection here. It doesn’t have to be.
Add Your Filter, Pinch, and Roll
I take my filter, and I place it in the end. Here’s where the tuck comes in and where the channel serves you. I want you to get in really close right here. Look at how I’m pinching it with my thumb. At this point, I can gently do a little rocking, a little rolling. I tilt her up. Move it around. The key is that pinch with my thumb on the filter. So, holding in place, she’s going to do all the work. I come in with my other thumb just to support and the thumb that’s pinching the filter begins the roll and my other thumb is just stretching the paper and keeping it all smooth.
Seal Your Paper into a Cone
Cute! Little triangle left. Give her a wee lick. Like a kitten lick. She’s tucked, and she’s getting help with the tuck. Oh, yeah. And really, if you notice, it’s that thumb that’s continuing to roll—not the rest of my hands. She’s starting to come together. Look at that cone. Now, here’s what I do. I give her a little tappy, tappy tap. Okay? Settle her down.
Gently Tamp Down Your Flower
And, then, I take a tamper. Now, you’re not going hard. It’s a gentle tamping. You’re not trying to crush the flower. Crush it, and lose the airflow.
Twist to Seal and Clip
Once you have it tamped, I take it and I hold her and I twist her. And then I like to make her pretty. I don’t like a messy jay. She likes to be ready for her close-up. Okay? So, I twist all the way to the top. Feeling good! And then a little clip. Don’t mind if I do.
How to Roll a Joint—Practice Makes Perfect
And, there we have it. A beautifully rolled joint—no tears. And I promise you, when you get the rhythm and flow of rolling down, this becomes such a calming and even meditative part of your ritual. And, hey, to become a master, practice makes perfect. So, get to rolling, bubbies. Earn those ten thousand hours.

How to Roll a Joint the Easy Way
How to Roll a Joint with Perforated Filters
Here’s how to roll a joint the easy way—just check out our artist series rolling papers. They all come with perforations to make rolling that m-shaped filter that Kim recommends totally foolproof. Plus, they’re made with unbleached hemp to keep you from inhaling any nasty chemicals, like bleach.
How to Roll a Joint with the Nebula Rolling Tray
We specifically created our Nebula Rolling Tray to help make rolling easier. After visiting Amsterdam early in her rolling days, our founder, Kristina, adapted it from the type of tray she was given at an Amsterdam coffeeshop. Mimicking the m-shape of our favorite filter, the m-shape of the tray keeps your flower right where you want it—in the channel of your paper.
