The Artist and Her Work
For the fourth edition of our artist series, we partnered with Chinese-American artist Jia Sung. These papers are wrapped in her original painting, Lanternfly. It's a dreamy, arresting portrayal of an alluring but invasive species originally from China, and it asks something of the person holding it. When we encounter the unfamiliar, whether a person, a place, or an idea, our instinct tends to be fear or fascination. Jia's work sits right in that tension and asks us to sit there too. The lanternfly is beautiful and complicated, which is exactly the point.
