Sleeker, Safer, Subtler: Everything You Need to Know About Sublingual THC
Quick Take
Sublingual THC is fantastic for a sophisticated experience that fits beautifully into your wellness routine. These forms of cannabis, especially THC sprays, fly under the radar even while they can check every box for those of us who want dose control, speed, and sophistication with our cannabis.
Unlike just a few years ago, you no longer need to hide cannabis in a drawer or limit it to smoky gatherings where everyone imbibes. Instead, you’ll now find THC mocktails at upscale dinner parties as well as responsible, legal enjoyment in the majority of US states.
Yet even with this evolution of cannabis culture, one of the most elegant forms of consumption still feels like a secret. You might still love the ritual of lighting a pre-roll or the decadence of a THC brownie. But, if you want cannabis that feels as elevated as your skincare routine, you need to know about sublinguals. They match the pace of modern life, travel effortlessly, and fit into environments where smoke doesn’t belong.
THC sprays and other under-the-tongue products bring cannabis into the future without losing a single iota of the effects you love.
What is a THC Sublingual?
A THC sublingual is a cannabis product designed to be placed under your tongue. In that part of your body, cannabinoids are absorbed through the oral mucosa directly into the bloodstream. Because this area is rich in capillaries and bypasses digestion, sublingual THC typically has a faster and more predictable onset than traditional edibles. This quirk of your anatomy is why you can feel the onset of a sublingual in as little as 15-30 minutes. Common forms of sublinguals include tinctures, oral strips, and THC sprays.
Sublinguals are the Goldilocks of cannabis. With them, you can get close to the immediate effects of inhalation, but with no harsh smoke. Plus, you get the gentleness of edibles on your system without waiting hours to feel it, or the risk of taking too much and having to ride out a bad high for what feels like forever.
These forms of THC include:
Tinctures
Oral strips
THC sprays
Each form of sublingual THC gives you a fast onset, a quiet consumption moment, and a consistent outcome. In contrast, edibles have to pass all the way through your digestive system, taking up to 4 hours for full effect. Unfortunately, that means they can surprise you with a stronger high than you wanted.
The funny thing is that, even though they feel so modern, sublingual cannabis actually dates back centuries. In the 1800s, apothecaries regularly prepared cannabis tinctures for patients to take under the tongue for pain, sleep, and general wellness. In fact, tinctures were one of the most common forms of cannabis. Today’s versions simply pair that old-world wisdom with better extraction and processing methods for faster onset.
How THC Sublinguals Work (the Science, Simplified)
When you inhale cannabis, THC moves from your lungs into your bloodstream immediately. When you eat an edible, the THC goes through your digestive system first. Then, because of the way your liver metabolizes it, its effects are multiplied.
Sublingual THC works differently. When you place it beneath your tongue and let it sit for a few seconds, it absorbs directly through that membrane and enters your bloodstream. Nothing is digested. Nothing is metabolized into something stronger.
You get a more predictable experience, one that unfolds quickly and stays at the dose you intended. No accidental all-day couch situation or surprise intensity.
If you like controlling your dose, sublinguals put you in the driver’s seat. You know how much you’re taking, how it will hit, and when you’ll feel its effects.
Timing at a Glance
Most people feel a sublingual hit within 15–30 minutes. With a moderate dose (≤10mg), effects typically last around 2 hours. Timing can vary based on dose, metabolism, and whether you swallow any of it.
Types of Sublinguals
All 3 types of sublinguals share a couple of characteristics. They’re great for anyone who wants the benefits of cannabis without the drawbacks of inhaling it. If you take them correctly (e.g., under your tongue), they also have a much faster onset than edibles and don’t require hours of commitment. Plus, with sublinguals, it’s much easier to control your dosing.
Tinctures
Tinctures are the OG of sublingual THC. If you have a really high THC tolerance or need serious pain relief, tinctures can be a lifesaver. They often pack a really big punch of THC, like from 200mg to 900mg per bottle.
One thing to watch with tinctures, though, is that they’re almost universally made with coconut oil. So, if you have a tree nut allergy, they’re not for you. Also, because you take them via an eyedropper under your tongue, they’re not a great option when you’re on the go. Most of us don’t want to whip out something that feels so medicinal when we’re out at a restaurant or lounge. Finally, since they’re oil-based, they’re not good for adding to beverages. No matter how much you mix them, they’ll still separate from the rest of your drink.
Oral Strips
Everyone has seen Listerine breath strips. Well, oral cannabis strips are just like that, except that they have a much nicer kick! They’re completely discreet and portable. Just make sure to dissolve them under your tongue to get fast onset, not on top of it like you would with a breath strip. Another issue with them is that they’re just not quite as universally available as tinctures.
THC Sprays
THC sprays are a fairly new innovation. You just spray them under your tongue, wait a minute, and feel the effects shortly afterwards. They come in oil or water soluble cannabis emulsion formulas. Unlike tinctures, sprays remove all the friction of public cannabis use. No smoke, no smell, no medicinal trappings. Most are super portable, and no one will wonder what you’re doing. Plus, with a spray, you never need to excuse yourself or step outside into the cold. They move with you quietly and gracefully, exactly the way modern cannabis should.
Why Does Sublingual THC Fit Modern Life?
Sublingual cannabis doesn’t require special tools (like pipes or grinders), any prep, or an hours-long wait to know how you feel.
Discreet When You Need It Most
Many sublinguals have none of the telltale cannabis scent and none of them require a lighter or anything else. You can use them at a dinner party, on a plane, in a rideshare, or when your toddler is a little too much. If you need cannabis to be subtle, this is your most polished option.
Gentle on Your Lungs
Not everyone wants to inhale smoke or vapor. You may have a sensitive throat or simply prefer not to irritate your lungs. A sublingual respects that. You get the clear, quick onset you want without compromising comfort.
Lasts About 2 Hours
With a moderate dose, the effects of a sublingual last about 2 hours. That’s about the same as smoking. You get enough time to enjoy the moment without committing to the all-day experience of edibles.
Versatility
Sublinguals are far more versatile than any other form of cannabis. Why? Because you can change up exactly how you’re taking them to achieve different kinds of effects. That’s why they’re perfect for travel. If you want a quick high, just take some under your tongue. Then, if you want a longer effect (like to help you stay asleep all night) you can swallow some directly so they perform like an edible. No other form of cannabis does that kind of double duty.

Our high-level comparison table makes it easy to see how each method behaves in real life. Modern cannabis gives you many ways to enjoy the plant. Each has its own personality, and each offers you something different.
Smoking
Smoking lets you feel the effects almost instantly. But the scent, the smoke, and the pressure on your lungs can make smoking less than ideal, especially in shared spaces. Also, with smoking, it’s impossible to get a precise dose. If you have a high tolerance, then that’s probably not an issue for you. But, if you’re microdosing and you know you only want to take 3mg, there’s no way to get that precise dose via inhalation.
Vaping
To the uninitiated, sleek, self-contained vape pens often feel like the most convenient cannabis option. But you still can’t vape in most public spaces and certainly not on public transit. Plus, for some of us, avoiding inhalation altogether is the best option. That’s even more important with vaping than with smoking flower. Vape cartridges contain oil that’s most commonly processed with toxic hydrocarbons, trace elements of which can get into your system.
Edibles
Edibles are one of the cleanest ways to ingest cannabis. And they last significantly longer than any other form. That’s great when they’re helping you sleep more soundly. But that can also be a big drawback. Once you’ve taken them, there’s no going back, often for way longer than you bargained.
We all know that different types of cannabis will affect you differently. That’s gold when you find the right one for you. But discovering that you got the wrong kind after taking an edible can be a nightmare. Our founders will never forget the time they took edibles one night at a conference. They discovered that they’d eaten the wrong kind for either of them. So, they both ended up not sleeping a wink when they had to be on their game the next day, and not in a fun way.
Then, there’s that pesky issue of dosing. Like us, you probably have that edibles story. The one where you took more than you meant to and spent the next few hours wondering when the room would stop spinning. Edibles can surprise you. When your liver transforms THC into a stronger compound, the effects hit harder and last longer, which makes pacing almost impossible. You take a bite, wait, feel nothing, take more, and suddenly you’re committed to an 8-hour ride you didn’t plan. Edibles are beautiful when you have the time and the right one for you. But they’re also the most unpredictable option for a busy life.
Enter The Spritz: House of Puff’s THC Spray
House of Puff created The Spritz because one of our founders wanted a lung-friendly option that was portable, discreet and versatile enough for travel, and that didn’t contain anything nasty, like those ugly hydrocarbons. For health reasons, Holly can’t smoke, and she wanted a quick onset form of cannabis that was easy to use in public, but without trace chemicals or harsh solvents.
The answer we came up with for her is a beautifully designed, hemp-derived Delta 9 THC spray extracted with CO₂. Since it’s made with hemp instead of cannabis, it’s legal to travel with it to many destinations. Because it looks like a breath spray or a lip gloss, you can use it discreetly in restaurants, on public transit, or even on airplanes. Since it’s water soluble and doesn’t have the classic unfavorable herbal after-taste, it mixes seamlessly into beverages or turns any snack into an edible. And, ‘natch, The Spritz doesn’t contain any nasty chemicals.
Based on Holly’s brief, we made two different formulas:
Social Spritz
Bright, minty, and uplifting. Social Spritz is a 2:1 combo of THC and CBD that’s perfect for gallery nights, evenings out, and spirited conversations.
Serenity Spritz
Soft, tropical, and calming, with a 1:1:1 ratio of THC, CBD, and CBN, small doses of Serenity Spritz are ideal for movie night, a warm bath, or taking the edge off anytime. In larger doses or as an edible, it can help you fall and stay asleep, even when you’re battling jet lag.
Dosing like a Pro with The Spritz
A spray (or 5) under your tongue unfolds within 15-30 minutes, giving you that signature sublingual rapid onset.
More importantly than that, with The Spritz, you can control your dosing with total precision. Each spray is only .2mg. No more guessing how much cannabis is in ¼ of a gummy or getting a much bigger hit than you bargained for from a vape. You’re in complete control. If you’re just starting out, you can compare a single milligram of THC with how 2mg make you feel. Or, if 5mg just isn’t doing it anymore, you don’t have to bump up to 10mg. Instead, you can try 5.4 or 6mg.
Then, if you prefer a slower, more edible-like experience, you can add The Spritz to a drink instead. When you drink it in a beverage (or eat it on a treat), it behaves just like any other edible. You get to choose your own adventure: fast and precise under the tongue, or drawn out and leisurely in your tummy.
That flexibility pairs beautifully with the hemp-derived, naturally-occurring Delta 9 THC we use in The Spritz. Naturally-occurring Delta 9 THC (not the synthetic stuff they sell at the gas station) is one of the most researched cannabinoids and offers an experience closest to what people associate with traditional cannabis. When sourced from hemp, it’s federally legal and delivers balanced, familiar effects. That makes it the most travel-friendly form of cannabis.
Apothecaries didn’t have sleek packaging, but they understood the benefits of placing a preparation under the tongue. Today’s THC sprays and tinctures simply update that wisdom with modern science, cleaner ingredients, and a design language that fits the lifestyle of the contemporary cannabis consumer.
Why are Sublinguals having a Moment Now?
We live in an era where wellness is curated with intention. Nonalcoholic cocktails, functional mushrooms, breathwork, and slow beauty rituals have become a part of everyday life. Most adults prefer consistent effects to excess and rituals instead of overwhelm. Sublingual cannabis aligns perfectly with this shift.
The Future Is Sublingual
As cannabis continues to evolve, sublingual THC is moving into the spotlight. Sublinguals are straightforward, efficient, and easy to integrate into your routine. You get rapid onset, consistent effects, discreet use, and a level of control that smoking and edibles can’t offer you. Water-soluble THC sprays are especially versatile because they can function as both a sublingual and an edible. Either way, they offer you a reliable way to enjoy cannabis with more intention and less guesswork.
Sleeker, safer, subtler. Now, that’s the House of Puff way.
Responsible Use
For legal adults 21+ use only. Start low and go slow. May cause drowsiness—don’t drive or operate machinery after using Delta-9. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
