Quick Take

Microdosing THC means taking just a tiny amount of cannabis (think 1–3mg) for potential benefits, like pain relief, sharper focus, or a calmer mood, without getting fully high. As always with cannabis, we need more research. But we’ve seen real results with it. Read on for everything you need to know to find your perfect microdose.

If it seems like everyone’s talking about microdosing lately, it’s because they are. Your hairdresser, your accountant, your totally straight-laced aunt. They’re all experimenting with mini doses of cannabis.

Sure, microdosing THC might seem like a sneaky excuse to enjoy cannabis whenever you want. But it’s more than just the latest wellness fad. It’s a ritual that’s as subtle as it is profound. Microdosing lets you tap into the potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis without the fear of feeling too high or losing control. Those of us who microdose (and we do!) report mild soothing effects like calm, clarity, and pain relief.

What Is Microdosing?

Microdosing is a nuanced, intentional approach to cannabis consumption. It’s all about finding your sweet spot, the Goldilocks zone where you get the lift without feeling high high. Just buzzy enough to either feel it or to not feel so much pain, but subtle enough that you can still go about your business.

With a cannabis microdose, you can get the perks without sacrificing functionality or productivity. That makes it an appealing option if you’re looking for a mindful way to work cannabis into your daily life.

Microdoses for Macro Effects

Microdosing has captured the attention of a wide range of people looking for relief from physical and mental health challenges. What’s driving it? A few things.

The legalization wave over the past few years has opened the door for more honest conversations about cannabis use, and attitudes have definitely evolved. From weed-infused dinners on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills to suburban paint-and-puff events, cannabis acceptance is growing fast across society.

In fact, a 2024 Pew Research cannabis legalization survey reported that only 11% of US adults think cannabis shouldn’t be legal. Thanks to this shift, more people are open to trying cannabis as a wellness option for everyday ailments. And that’s exactly where a microdose really shines.

What Dose is a Microdose?

Finding the right dose takes a little experimentation. Like the age-old weed adage goes: start low and go slow. Everyone’s tolerance for cannabis is unique, so you can’t necessarily microdose the exact same way your friend does.

Factors like body weight, metabolism, past cannabis use, and even what you had for lunch can influence how you respond. Start with a minimal dose (1–3mg) at a time when it doesn’t matter if you get a little high. Then, clock how you feel and gradually adjust up or down until you get the effect you’re looking for. When you’re first trying out microdosing, you want to gauge your sensitivity to THC without overdoing it.

Remember: the right dosage for microdosing THC might be way lower than you think

Microdosing THC for Mental Health

One key reason people are turning to small doses of THC is the potential to support mental wellness without the side effects that many prescription drugs can bring. In our experience, it’s subtle, but it can really lift your spirits.

THC and other cannabinoids interact with some of the same neurotransmitter systems as traditional pharmaceuticals prescribed for anxiety and depression. But those meds can come with side effects ranging from severe drowsiness to weight gain and reduced sex drive, or worse with drugs like benzos. A cannabis microdose, by contrast, comes with a refreshingly low risk of adverse reactions.

Research into cannabis and mental wellness is still developing, but early studies are encouraging. A 2018h study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders about cannabis and mental health found that cannabis use was associated with significant reductions in self-reported depression, anxiety, and stress. More research is needed, but the early picture is promising.

Whether you’re managing everyday stress, some anxiety, or just feeling a little blue, microdosing cannabis might be worth exploring. And yes, it might also be a pretty great way to get through dinner with your most challenging in-law.

Not interested in popping pain pills with a laundry list of side effects? Just a tiny cannabis dose during the day, or at night, might be all it takes to soothe your aches and pains. And that’s without taking the toll on your liver that popping an Advil does.

There’s a solid and growing body of research into the potential effects THC could have on inflammation and pain. A review from the National Academies of Sciences about cannabis for pain concluded there’s substantial evidence that cannabis could be an effective treatment for chronic pain. Plus, newer studies are starting to focus specifically on the effects of microdoses.

These studies paint an exciting early picture, suggesting that even the smallest doses of THC could have a meaningful impact on pain relief. We’re still waiting on larger clinical trials. But our COO, Holly, microdoses every day for chronic pain, and she swears by it.

Microdosing for Creativity and Focus

Microdosing has also become something of a secret weapon for improving focus and enhancing creativity. Cannabis isn’t just about relaxing into oblivion. It’s long been associated with expanded thinking, and we can thank it for contributing to some of the best art, music, and poetry of the last century.

But here’s the thing: it actually takes very little cannabis to tap into that potential. For those of us looking to boost creativity, a small dose can be an impeccable muse. And that’s not just for artists. Finance folks crunching numbers and marketing mavens crafting campaigns can all find it helpful. Professionals we work with every day are microdosing to sharpen their concentration. It’s just a subtle lift that might send your productivity soaring.

Microdosing in the Wild

In Silicon Valley, where innovation and productivity are prized, microdosing has been a fan favorite for years. While the tech crowd often prefers psychedelics, microdosing THC maintains strong appeal with those who are wary of hallucinogens.

The fast-paced, high-stress nature of the tech industry has fueled serious interest in microdosing as a way to open your mind to more innovation. And because tech leaders have a significant cultural impact these days, that’s opened the door for microdosing to gain traction among a much wider population of working professionals.

How to Incorporate Microdosing into Your Lifestyle

Microdosing is like shopping for jeans. Everyone’s body is different, so there’s no one-size-fits-all. What works for your bestie might not work for you, and what works for you might not work for your mom.

Start by figuring out why you want to microdose. Your motivation will shape the roadmap. Are you looking for increased focus? Then, start super low, and a strain with alpha-pinene in it might help. Looking for pain relief? Go for cannabis with high CBD, at least a 1:1 ratio with THC. Are you planning to microdose during the day (go lower) or at night (try a little higher)? How long do you want to feel the effects? For short term, you might want to inhale. For long term, try an edible. Answering these questions will help you get started.

Choose Your Adventure

The first thing to decide is how you want to consume your microdose. You’ve got plenty of options, including sublinguals, edibles, infused beverages, flower, and vapes. The choice is all yours.

Inhalation: Fast but Can Be Hard to Dose

For the fastest relief, stick with a vape or a one-hitter. When you inhale, THC and the other cannabinoids enter your lungs and are rapidly absorbed into your bloodstream. The effects hit almost instantly. The trade-off is that inhalation effects don’t last as long as edibles or sublinguals, and it’s harder to control your exact dose. That’s why we love a one hitter. Because a one hitter bowl is so small, it’ll naturally keep your dose smaller.

Edibles and Infused Beverages: Tasty but Long-Lasting

If you’re prioritizing discretion (or smoking just isn’t for you), edibles and infused cannabis beverages are now some of the most popular ways to microdose. They’re a tasty path to that uplifted feeling you’re after. Since they travel through your digestive system, they can take up to 2 hours before you feel any effects. The flip side is that edibles also linger longer in your system, making them ideal for times when you want a sustained effect, like when you’re microdosing to improve your sleep.

Sublinguals: The Cannabis Goldilocks ZoneAt only. 2mg per spray, the spritz is house of puff's microdosing superhero

If microdosing is the cannabis Goldilocks zone, then sublinguals are your ticket to it. They hit faster than edibles, last longer than smoking, and come in the most discreet form of all. With just a few sprays or drops, you can start to feel the effects gently unfold in about 30 minutes.

Sublinguals also offer a more controlled and predictable experience. Low-dose options like the Spritz make it exceptionally easy to dial in your dose with precision. For instance, each spray of the Spritz is a tiny .2mg. It’s the easiest way to find exactly the dose that works for you. Want an uplifting daytime lift? Try 3 sprays of Social Spritz. Winding down at night? Treat yourself to 5 sprays of Serenity Spritz. It’s the best way to explore how having a tiny bit more might make you feel.

Get into the Routine

Establishing a microdosing routine makes integrating cannabis into your daily life a breeze. Consistency is the key to reaping the potential benefits of microdosing THC, especially when you’re trying it for therapeutic purposes.

Identify the times of day or activities you feel you’d benefit most from a little bit of cannabis. It could be before yoga, during a creative brainstorming session, or after a long day at work. Keep close track of your experiences so you can adjust your routine to maximize any benefits you feel.

Understanding your own tolerance and sensitivity to THC is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience. Even at microdose levels, cannabis still affects everyone a little differently.

Microdoses of Magic

The growing acceptance of microdosing THC is proof of cannabis’s evolution in the modern world. It’s become a real focal point of conversations around the plant’s potential to enhance our lives in meaningful ways.

The beauty of microdosing cannabis lies in its versatility. You can choose your own adventure based on what you’re looking to achieve. Need to spark some inspiration for a new painting? Calm your nerves before a flight? Get that pitch deck to your boss before EOD? Microdosing THC might just do the trick.

Responsible Use

For legal adults 21+ use only. Start low and go slow. May cause drowsiness. Don’t drive or operate machinery after using cannabis or hemp-derived THC products. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
